Coaching Search Over: Cross Hired

It is not a good metric. On the other hand it does not give the fan base much to be encouraged by as most of us had not heard of Cross and that is the only game we have seen a Cross coached team play.

Emotions matter to fans. Logic says he is a decent coach with a solid lower level record. Emotions say, oh my, his team looked awful yesterday.

He will get a shot at GT if hired. He lost some fan support yesterday.
Then they weren’t fans. It was just the fellas that showed up with three weeks to go in the season that said “Ya know, if we hired Bill Self we’d probably be better”

Actually I agree in today's environment. half-assing today costs millions and as we just saw, with absolutely nothing to show for it. Last place should be purchased without a massive squandering of scarce resources. Even committing half (give or take) of what your competitors do is a fool's errand. The people in charge should be smarter than this.

When I initially poked at this concept a few weeks ago, it was admittedly tongue in cheek. But the more I thought about it, it makes sense…

We won 2 ACC games and spent an estimated $3.5M in NIL to do so. Obviously none of us are happy with that result.

Had we spent $0, likely won 0 games, we’d still be out the ACC tournament but have millions in the bank. As a fan, I could get behind that since it would actually be a plan, and not doing the same thing and expecting different results.

It takes considerable expertise to bake a cake from scratch. It also takes a lot of time. You may not have that time. If you don't have that expertise, then the outcome might actually end better to go out and buy a Hostess Ding Dong than to try to bake a cake from scratch and end up with a disaster.

the point is, being "lazy" might have been the best choice.

Eh, it may work out, but if that was the driving force it tells me they didn't find the best candidate.

I can't stand the buddy-buddy, good ol boy network crap.
Homer Rice kinda did that with Cremins. He knew him from when he was AD at North Carolina as Cremins was a player at SC then. Back when the Gamecocks were in the ACC.

Of course, a lot of people said no before BC said yes.

On the other hand, how many of us have interviewed people, checked their background and references, thought they were great, and ended up regretting hiring the person?

Sometimes, we call it the “old boy network”. Other times, it’s hiring someone you know is good because you have experience with them, and it’s an informed hire.

If you’re hiring your good buddy because you like them, it’s stupid and corrupt. I’d you’re hiring someone fantastic because you have insider information, it’s smart. Hopefully, it’s the latter (smart).

The least I can do is acknowledge that people use the old boy buddy network in a corrupt way, so here’s wrestling offspring Ted Dibiase Jr on trial for embezzlement:

I mean

Cross has 350 wins under his belt. So the experience is definitely there. It just depends on if it’ll translate to the ACC.

If you can’t bake, you shouldn’t run a pastry shop.

That’s pretty close to official.

Key parts from Thamel’s article:

Georgia Tech has agreed to a five-year deal with Troy coach Scott Cross to be the school's next men's basketball head coach, a source told ESPN

Cross has three career NCAA tournament appearances, including No. 13 Troy's loss to Nebraska on Thursday. He went 225-161 at UT Arlington from 2006-07 through 2017-18.

His dismissal at UT Arlington after three straight 20-win seasons has proved to be one of the biggest administrative blunders in recent college basketball history.

Cross' hire marks one of the first marquee additions for first-year athletic director Ryan Alpert, who came to Georgia Tech from Tennessee in July.

Throughout the hiring process, Tech officials made clear to candidates that they would fund the program competitively in the ACC.

At this point, talent development should be what we are aiming for. We aren't spending money like other schools, so why try to play their game? Find lesser-known talent, develop them, and try to win in 2-3 years provided they are still here. Once we start winning, then maybe we can convince people to spend on the program. To me, this is a crossroads hire. Are we willing to give this guy a little bit to build the program and turn it into a consistent winner that will attract money? Or do we squeeze out the resources, complain when we lose, and fire the guy 3 years in and find ourselves even further behind the proverbial 8-ball? I'm fine losing for a short time if I see development and proof of concept. When CDS kept losing without development or proof of concept, that's when I knew he had to go.

Nothing boils my blood quite as much as vague, government-like terminology. “Fund it competitively”
I’m just pasting the info, man

This is like a Junior at Tech taking a part-time gig at Cook Out on Northside Drive to pay their way through college, finally earning their engineering degree, and then declining job offers from Google and Microsoft to remain a cashier.
