What bits I saw I saw almost the same exact offensive plays as under stoudamire. Pick and roll, "pocket pass", long pass across the court that is 50/50 a turnover. Just a lot of the same. If it looks like that consistently, all tech did was slow down the pace of the same thing stoudamire did.

Listen, I can see legit reasons for skepticism (57 percent winning percentage at mid majors, 0-3 in the NCAAT) but the dude has coached 600 games. You can't base an opinion on just one.
You know my first impression of @Peacone36 was that he was huggable like a pine knot, but I hung in there and now I see that although that is still true, the man stirs a solid maple bourbon and his homemade blueberry ice cream is passable.

Maybe possible Coach Cross grows on me the same way.

Agreed, but...

If tech is going to be near the bottom of NIL, they're likely to be less talented. And this one game was an example of him coaching a team that is outclassed talent wise. And his offense looked as inept in execution as Stoudamire's at its worst. Now a fair point to make is that Stoudamire's looked that way despite his ability to recruit better for tech... But if you're going to replace him, you'd hope to get someone who's schemes help mitigate the talent disparity.

This is pure speculation and just a fun thought, but think about it this way. This Nebraska team would also beat the dog out of the CDS GT team from this season. This Troy team could probably play even with CDS’s team, maybe beat them, but with far less athletic players.

I’m not drinking the kool-aid. It’s just hard to evaluate much based off of this one game, because these Troy players are clearly not P4 level players.
Yeah, we all wanted to see David slay Goliath but oh well. I’m feeling jittery about this potential hire but what we are hoping is that a good Xs and Os guy can also pick up ACC level talent.

Worst case, we get somebody like Brian Gregory 😳 but with better recruiting.

Is it a better idea to look at the guy winning the Sun Belt, losing 4 starters to the portal, replacing them and winning the Sun Belt the next year or looking at one tournament game? I really don't think I know if he'd be any good at GT but I am pretty sure the one game isn't the best metric.

No way, but we should have given Pastner another year and the same resources we gave CDS.
The problem is that we have entered into a perpetual cycle of needing to clean house to get the commitments needed for additional resources. Hopefully we can get a good guy and give him just enough resources that people see proof of concept and actually want to get him more resources.

Being less talented isn't a binary condition. There is a gradient to it. And coaching can only do so much to mitigate a talent discrepancy.

Troy this year lost 4 starters to transfer and added nothing from the portal. I would guess that even among the one bid leagues that isn't a common dynamic in the conference champions and it's why they were predicted 4th in conference in the preseason. IMO that type of talent discrepancy (from today's game) isn't what we face here.

It also doesn't help that Hoiberg himself is probably one of the better "tactical" coaches himself.

Looks to me like they added two transfers in Green and Campbell with a lot of freshmen recruits. No idea on talent level. Full 15 man roster.
