Eh, it may work out, but if that was the driving force it tells me they didn't find the best candidate.

I can't stand the buddy-buddy, good ol boy network crap.
I will say it looks like Brent Jones at Troy hired Scott Cross after a coaching search, and it doesn’t appear there was a prior relationship to influence that.

Hiring somebody because he’s your buddy is one thing. Hiring somebody at your new job because you know he performed well when he was hired for the same role at your old job is another.

On the other hand, how many of us have interviewed people, checked their background and references, thought they were great, and ended up regretting hitting the person?

Sometimes, we call it the “old boy network”. Other times, it’s hitting someone you know is good because you have experience with them, and it’s an informed hire.

If you’re hiring your good buddy because you like them, it’s stupid and corrupt. I’d you’re hiring someone fantastic because you have insider information, it’s smart. Hopefully, it’s the latter (smart).

I never regretted hitting them tho.

Ducking Autocorrect sucks so bad

==========

The NY Times reports kind of even handedly, including this quote:

A Georgia Tech source said the administration likes the way Cross handled the transfer portal at Troy, which like many mid-majors faces more frequent roster turnover.

$2 million for an ACC coach. That’s not competitively funded right off the bat. Casey Alexander was never a real option.

Maybe he was willing to take less to get more for the staff pool. Fair to say it's still not football where money seems to be no object anymore. But with middle tier support and hoping he is a good coach, maybe we are a .500 program with an occasional tournament appearance. I think that's probably the short term goal anyway

That’s a hell of a gamble. Give up your job where you’re a rockstar for a middling power 5 job and you take below market value? Titanium balls, I’ll give him that.
