We lost a ton of seniors. We tried to reload through the portal.

On one hand, we’re supposed to be keeping the same offense. On the other hand, we are changing up our offensive line coaching staff, and even though the scheme is supposed to be the same, I think offensive line coaching will change a lot.

We flipped most of the offensive staff, but I still expect most of the changes on the OL.

On defense I expect a more aggressive scheme. I don’t mind the changes on defense as much, because our players didn’t look that comfortable last year—a style change is probably just what the doctor ordered

I think for the first three or four games, we will be finding our footing. I could see us going 3-1 or 2-2 as we gel.

Overall, it seems like 6-8 wins next year. VT should be much better. We should snag an upset. Hopefully we break the UGA streak

OTOH, I am too old for cautious realism myself. ;) I am going to enter the rest of the seasons I have left with over the top wild unadulterated exuberance.*

* That's not entirely true tbh as I only picked us to be 9 - 3. Where is the so-called "over the top exuberance" in my own play-it-safe prediction??? Frankly, all of the outcomes that have received votes have an almost equal likely outcome imo. And I agree that any attempt at prediction in today's market is purely for entertainment purposes only.
My take too. It’s impossible in the current order of things to predict accurately what ANY football program is going to do this season outside of saying coaches like Cignetti will probably have their team ready to play. Getting all hyper serious about projecting a retreat for Tech in performance standards seems like an unusual need to control the future out of fear of surprises. Enjoy life now, live it up, and don’t borrow trouble.

This thread is for entertainment purposes only.

Had you told me 123 votes would have been tallied to date, I could have safely predicted how many people would have voted for each record. I would have created a Gaussian distribution around 7-5/8-4 and would have been pretty close to dead on. GT fans are so predictable. Everyone tries to be pragmatic and "realistic" and not what a true fan should be, which is wildly optimistic. Everyone should be predicting 12-0 baby!

I like the idea of the GT fan base raising expectations. We will not get to the place we want to be if we keep believing that 7-5 or 8-4 is good enough for Tech. We need to change the paradigm
and not settle for 7 or 8 wins. When Notre Dame wins 9, their fans don't accept that the next year's win-loss record has to regress. The fan base needs to let the Tech administration and coaching staff know that they will not accept mediocrity regardless of the circumstances.

The linked SI article is not about projecting the 2026 record, but what the expectations should be for the Tech offense next year. See article and excerpts below.

An early look will likely be a run-first type of offense that will lean on Justice Haynes and Malachi Hosley, two running backs who averaged seven yards per carry. Haynes was the best pickup for the Yellow Jackets out of the portal. Haynes rushed for 857 yards and 10 touchdowns a season ago and brings something to this offense they never had, which is consistent home-run ability. Godsey will likely lean on that tandem to lead the offense.

An offense that is predicated on the run and the offensive line to set the tone and move the ball down the field. Getting the quarterback in a rhythm early with the quick passing game and getting the ball to the playmakers in the open field. Then, when the defense begins to creep up and stop the run, the Yellow Jackets go over the top with play action and hit on explosive plays down the field, whether to tight ends or their explosive wide receivers. I think it is a recipe for success and should allow them to control the game, tempo, and physicality, which is a calling card for Coach Key.

There isn't a better duo in the ACC than Haynes/Hosley, and I'd say they are top 5 nationwide. Key got his man and it wouldn't surprise me in the least to see us run the ball 35-40 times a game. The thought process will probably be the same as when CPJ was here: we don't throw it a ton, but when we do, we have to make it count. We need just enough of a threat in the passing game that defenses don't stack 8 in the box every play. Haynes/Hosley will take care of the rest.

🙂🙂
The old "true fan" litmus test.
Of course ask 10 fans what it means to be a "true fan" and you'll get 10 different answers.
There is no objective standard.
🙂🙂
Nope. A true fan is a glutton for punishment. They put their heart and soul into believing their team is going to win it all every year and are devastated and bewildered when they don't (tic). There are realistic fans and then there are GT fans. GT fans always downgrade team expectations and anticipate regression. Unfortunately, too often it's true. I wonder if it's a self-fulfilling prophecy.

This is going to greatly reduce the risk of breaking in a new QB as well as the OL. The OL can initially put more focus on the run game. Plus with the great new addition of the blocking TE's. The run game really should be dominate. Giving the passing game time to gel and then the offense takes it to the next level around game 6-7 as the passing game expands

I'm pretty sure the levels of optimism or realism or pessimism among GT fans have zero effect on how many games the team wins. 🙂

Also quick question - what happens to your true fan when Tech loses the first game in a season and 12-0 is no longer possible? Does said fan go through the rest of the season "devastated and bewildered"? 😞

if we lose a game, we move to 11-1. I'm not defining a true fan as thinking we win every game, but as someone that is fanatically optimistic about our prospects. Maybe it was a bad choice of words because people get butt-hurt about others defining what a true fan is rather than just reading the post and understanding what is being stated.

I promise I'm not butthurt, just having some fun.
Hence all the emoticons. 🙂

Wasn't worried about you being offended, but you did point out the fact that we have debated "true fan" before, so it probably wasn't a good choice of words. Had it offended you, you'd probably have approached it differently. I kind of define fan as a fanatic, which to me means irrationality when it comes to optimism for the future and downplaying past failures.

I'm clearly not a true fan since I have never gone into a season expecting to be undefeated.
I hope the team can go undefeated, but I don't expect it.

But i'll still be here for season 46 of following the program.;)

yeah, there's a being a fan and being a GT fan ;)

i don't expect to win every game. Even if you're the most dominant team in the country that's tough to do. But, I look at the schedule and my first question is "is there a team we can't beat?" If there isn't, then I'm not willing to concede that game as a loss until we've lost it. Therefore, when I go through the schedule game-by-game, I don't count any losses. Therefore, undefeated.

For the most part, you know what kind of team you have after the first 3-4 games. Outside of injuries, we'll know what kind of OL we'll have, what kind of QB will be our future, how well our defense will be, etc.

This program is currently in "reset" mode. IMO, the 4 biggest factors for a team are: HC, OC, DC, QB. We are currently transitioning to a new person for 3 of the 4. Both sides of our lines are also going through a transition. I think the only positions we clearly are improved at are RB and TE. Everywhere else, it's a big question mark. The past two seasons, we knew our offense was good, so we could lean on the Offense to help pace the game and help us win games. It's a question next season as to what our strengths will be. Yes, we probably have one of the best RB duos in all of college football, but if they don't get half decent blocking, we could be in a lot of trouble offensively. IMO, next year's defense will be a LOT of boom or bust. I can see us either smothering other offenses, or getting dusted by them like in the NC State and Pitt game last season. We took lot of chances on younger unproven talent in the Portal to restock the defense, and it could be a big learning curve on the defensive side of the ball.

GT fans will learn a LOT about what kind of coach we have next season. IMO, Key will do well taking us back to a bowl game. If he wins more than 7-8 games, it will be one of the better coaching jobs I can remember given how much of our coaches and personnel has turned over.

I thought we would have a really good season last year, I predicted 9+ wins...and we were thisclose to going to the ACCCG and the closest this program has ever been to a playoff birth. Unfortunately, the latter two didn't happen. I'm not gonna lie, I'm nervous about next season...but I'm also really excited. I'm an offensive guy. I really liked some of the stuff Faulkner did the first two seasons here, but I thought the play calls were uneven last season. We're not giving Haynes King enough credit for carrying our offense last year...there's a reason why he was first team All ACC and ACC Player of the Year. He was exceptional. I don't think we have another Haynes King level player on the team for next season. This will have to be a group that's bigger than than the sum of its parts on offense. There's talent there to do it, and it will now be up to Godsey to find the right formula.

Key just got a big contract, and he will definitely need to earn it next season.

So do you get butt hurt when someone who cheers and supports GT win or lose but does not think 12-0 is realistic is called a True Fan?

True fans come in more varieties than we can count. Why anyone puts GT fans down for how they follow, support or enjoy GT sports is beyond me.
