Conference Realignment

Not gonna lie. Assuming Florida State and Clemson move to the SEC, I’d rather play Auburn, Clemson, LSU, Florida State, Alabama, Tennessee and Georgia more than Ohio State, Iowa, Maryland, Nebraska and other places I can’t really drive to.
I agree but we should take any lifeline out of the ACC. As an institution, we align better with the B1G academically.

I of the opposite view. We already play Georgia yearly, (and UGA has publicly expressed a desire to maintain "Clean Old Fashion Hate" despite the nine game SEC slate.) and we can easily schedule any of the other nearby SEC schools including Clemson and/of FSU. However, having yearly games with national programs like Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, Nebraska, Wisconsin, USC, Oregon, Washington etc., in addition to UGA, (UGA has publicly expressed a desire to maintain "Clean Old Fashion Hate" despite the nine game SEC slate.) plus the occasional nearby SEC power would make GT nationally known and familiar brand and draw. And the ATL airport makes it easy to travel to the BIG 10 locals. GT would need to just win baby!

I work with a lot of USC alums and the Big 10 thing has been pretty meh for them. Though some of that is just them being super meh under Riley. We aren’t as far away from most of the Big10 but it’s definitely a factor still.

Though generally I do like the idea of playing SEC OOC and a Big 10 conference schedule. Would make us stand out in the local market more.

And if there’s not much left outside of those two leagues I’m sure there’d be plenty of OOC.

I have a feelign the SEC adds four to get to 20 teams. The logical additions are GT FSU CLEMSON and one of UNC, UVA, Lousiville Depending on needs. Personally i think it would be UNC. the basketball pedigree would help the SEC basketball which has been getting a bit more serious it also give the SEC the NC market.

Just based on how things seem to be trending, the Big 10 is rising right now and has surpassed the SEC imo, so that's the ship I'd rather be aboard. It seems they have a better long term plan. Their payouts are also bigger, which would go a long way to gaining leverage over ugag and the other surrounding SEC schools. Not as interested in playing their teams though vs SEC, and if we are only playing 1 extra power OOC game beyond ugag, I'd want to have VT, Duke, UNC, etc in the mix vs losing them completely to play SEC teams OOC. Would be easier if we were in the SEC to schedule the former ACC rivals for OOC.

If able we should take either. If there is a choice we should take the one offering the most money long term.
I’d prefer closer away games and playing regional rivals. This also helps the sports programs outside of football with travel. Some want to align better academically with the Big 10 and I can understand that also. Big 10 also makes more at this time for a full share payout.

Stop overthinking and take the one we feel offers the most money long term. That should be the #1 deciding factor in this decision. Please note here the Big 10 offer we turned down to stay in the ACC and look how that was a bad idea.

This is not really relevant in 2025 since nothing is likely to happen for a few more years. But, having a winning program may not be important to the B1G. Nebraska, UCLA, Rutgers, and Maryland are not, and certainly have not been in a very long while, elite programs. I am glad Key has turned GT into a football school again. Almost more than the win was seeing the students engaged in huge numbers.

That said, I believe the SEC wants top tier games every weekend and would be more likely to invite GT with a great football program than not.

When I think of joining the SEC my mind instantly drifts to seeing games against Missouri, South Carolina, Arkansas, Mississippi State, and Kentucky, teams I have zero interest in, and teams that don’t help us if we beat them but hurt us a lot if we lose to them.

That’s the trade off if we are longing to play Alabama, Florida, Auburn, Tennessee, and Georgia.

I understand we are kind of in the same boat with the B1G but the monetary payout and national attention looks mighty attractive at this point.

I think we should take either $ec or big 10 over ACC. But I think big 10 makes more sense. Conferences are more than football schedules. And the big 10 (at least classical big 10 schools), align academically a lot more with us than the podunks of the $ec.

I am extremely biased since my brother went there and I lived in SWVA for a few years, but I would really hate to lose the rivalry with VT. They have an amazing football culture at the school and it is easily the most fun away game I’ve ever been to. They are a similar school academically also. They need to turn their football team around, but I still enjoy that rivalry.
