You can convert some in-person grad students to at least be secondary fans but I think close to 20k or more of the 33 at GT are pure online.

Do you know if GT undergrad has grown more than average over the last couple decades when it went from like 14k to 22k? Looks like UT Austin hasn’t increased as much as a quick giant-school ref point. But Purdue has gone up like 14k in ten years.
I think GT's undergrad growth on a % basis looks very good, but on a raw numbers basis it is at best avg and probably below avg.
Just a function of the divisor in the base for GT is much smaller to start with than most of its competitors.

GT is likely always going to have to deal with having a smaller undergrad base.
It's also worth noting that the demographics of GT undergraduate student body are significantly different than most P4 public schools.

Yeah, but Purdue is in a ****ty location, so. . .
That is an opinion, not a fact.
Been there, I think it is actually a pretty place. Pretty flat - as is typical in IND, but its tree lined, nice college town. Campus is attractive.

And from a recruiting standpoint they are in a pretty good location.
They have 6 players from IND on their roster, including their top 3, and 1 from Chicago.
Their 8 man rotation includes 3 from IND, 1 from Chicago,1 from Mass, 1 from Atlanta, 1 from Australia and 1 from Israel.

Think @gte447f was being sarcastic with that quip. But regardless, the point was already made earlier by someone else in the thread: I'd "suffer" for a year (or 4 years) in West Lafayette for $1.5m/yr rather than spend a year (or 4 years) in Atlanta at $500k/yr, and this is coming from someone who loves cities. I wouldn't have to spend more than a couple seconds mulling that decision to be honest.

Cherry picking one example that is doing well. Purdue gets Big Ten media money and Georgia Tech gets ACC media money. Repeat each year and it adds up quickly. Purdue's coach has been there over 20 years and was allowed to have down years in between the good years before finally becoming really good. There is no way fans here would allow a coach only 2 sweet 16's in his first 11 years. We would run his *** out of town in a heartbeat.

I didn’t read down through every statement on here, but I actually thought about Iowa last night. Their roster is constructed of a D2 guy, JUCO, several three stars, and a few transfers. They have a coach that demands hard work & excellence. Why not us?
McCollum is excellent and has won everywhere he goes. Nothing against Cross and we have him now but Georgia Tech is the exact place that needs to identify a young coach that just wins. Can you imagine the temper tantrums that would be thrown if we tried to hire a guy that coach for years at NW Missouri State and had one year of D1 experience at Drake?

What? He made the NCAAT 8 years out of 11, won a conference regular season and conference tournament (separate seasons). There is no way in hell he'd be run out of town here.

People tried to run Paul Johnson out of here because it wasn't good enough. And Danny Hall because he couldn't get to Omaha.

Josh Pastner won an ACC Tournament too, by the way. I know his overall success was nothing close to Painter and am not comparing them but winning a single conference tournament doesn't guarantee anyone X number of years.

I don't recall either of those being fired. Far cry from being run out of town in a heartbeat.

The people against Johnson were largely because of his style of offense and belief it limited what the team could accomplish (specifically as it pertains to limiting recruiting). And by the time he stepped away college offenses had developed to the point where the offense wasn't as much of an advantage as it once was. Football was also a significantly different situation as he took over a program that had made a bowl 11 consecutive years. He would extend that streak to 18 and then miss going bowling 2 of the next three years before getting back there his last year. That is a far cry from taking over a program that been to the NCAAT once in 15 years.

Don't know enough about baseball to really comment, but he was here 32 years and retired when he was 70. He made the college world series last in 2006 and lasted 19 years after that, so again, hardly being run out of town in a heartbeat.

Yes, my dig at Purdue’s location was an attempt at sarcasm (probably poorly executed).

Anyway, I fully agree with both of your analyses of the location factor in this case.

Yeah but their roster still looks like Jimmy, Merle, Rade, Buddy and Everett

Purdue is a good example of what we can do at GT on basketball, only better. No reason we can't be at that level. Why would Purdue be able to raise more NIL than GT? ****ty location, ****tier AD.
Well they've had 2 coaches in 46 years with one being a Hall of Famer and the other on the way there. There's success, an established culture and developmental system in place and relationships with boosters and money people that has been there for decades. That's not easy to replicate.

Apparently you don't understand the word "tried" and tried to interject "fired" into there. I'll assume it's because you didn't like the point being made and it doesn't fit your narrative.

If you don't think our fanbase spent years bitching about Paul Johnson and Danny Hall's success then we can just agree to disagree.

Your justification for the belief that Painter would be run out of town in a heartbeat is two coaches who were not run out of town at all, and instead retired here and I'm the one that switched things up?

Maybe it's you don't understand the term being run out of town.

Just so we’re clear… we all agree that we don’t want to be Purdue if they lose tonight, right? Elite Eight… losers.
