I didn't submit a list but Siddle and Alexander would have been my top 2.

James Jones from Yale would be another high on my list.

Jon Perry at Navy is another i'm really intrigued by. Only one season as a HC, but he is having an all-time great year at Navy 26-6, 17-1 won 14 straight games. 2nd most wins in a season (below only a David Robinson year and they have the potential to catch that one).

There are a handful of high level assts I like but they are at schools that spend alot on basketball and I wonder how they will do at a program that spends below avg for its conference.

I think if we are going to make a change you have to find a coach that has been successful at a school where they aren't outspending their conference opponents and still winning.
That suggests a coach that is good at some combination of identifying undervalued players, developing players, and/or coaching prep and in-game.

Since I think we are in position to think uniquely "out of the box," what about a woman coach? The women's field doesn't pay as well so the money we bring to the table would buy a lot of coaching bang for the buck. And I think the women's game has progressed to the point where the distance between the men's and women's fields is shrinking.

I'm sure there is a woman's coach who would love the opportunity to be the one to break this barrier. Might bringing in a top end woman coach be an "end around" our financial situation and get someone with real coaching chops?

Would anyone like to bet me that the next coach of your Georgia Tech Men's Basketball program is NOT named on that list?

40+ names and I bet our next guy is not one of them.....2 Ice Cold Busch Lights (or Coca Cola's) at next year's season opener on the line!
I would not take this wager if you multiplied the payout by 100.

I think that says an awful lot about the confidence this program has instilled in its fans.

Well, the obvious target for your point is Dawn Staley. How realistic a shot GT has for that is another story.

Your idea is better than hiring someone like Brian Gregory...ahem...

EDIT: Staley makes $4 mill a year at USCe

...and she's worth every penny of that.

Here’s a name gaining steam and one to watch. Scott Cross at Troy. He was hired by our current assistant AD. They’re tight and he’s had success at tough stops.

Personally, I was hoping for a sexier name, but we could probably do a lot worse. I’d much prefer someone like him to a name like Bobby Hurley.

This would be such an uninspiring choice. This is the making change in order to present the illusion of trying, not actually trying to win, that I am afraid of. It would likely also be the end of my GT fandom. Not to be dramatic, but enough is enough already. If you DGAF lets drop to the Fun Belt or the SoCon where we might actually make a tournament once in a while.

I've always held the belief that what you said in bold should always be GT's philosophy for hiring coaches given our operating budget versus factories. We are not outcompeting factories for dollars, but GT can outcompete factories by making good astute hires. I've long been an advocate for hiring guys who were successful at the lower levels. Cremins and Hewitt fit that bill. Paul Johnson on the football side fit that bill. Bo Ryan at Wisconsin fit that bill before Badgers hired him.

Sometimes I wonder if ADs make certain "out of the box" hires in order to get that "astute eye for talent" reputation to catapault them to the next rung in their AD career. Unfortunately, at a school like GT, if you swing and miss on "out of the box" hires, it hurts a lot more.

Choosing a new coach in today's NIL world. Today's successful coach must as in the past, be an evaluator of talent, and a good recruiter, once he has selected his "targets". However, now he must optimize his use of his NIL budget. Overpaying or underbidding can be disastrous. Scouring the entire country and wise application of the NIL may be the most important in building a new team from scratch.

Could we get Dawn Staley? I would be with this 1000%

No, but I’d bet he comes from this list. The highlight is only because the list comes from that school’s website.

Was not expecting Speedy Claxton or Greg Gary.

Claxton is at Hofstra—his Alma mater—but plays a pretty weak schedule
Speedy Claxton’s weak schedule this past season put him on the road v Pittsburgh & Syracuse. Both December wins, a week apart. GT hosted both, one defeat worse than the other. Rick Pitino called him one of the best coaches he ever coached against. Look at Preston Edmead and Cruz Davis and how they played at Pitt & Cuse. Both guards, Preston at point and they have eligibility left. We could do worse.

He’s also got Santa Clara in the hunt for an at large

Excuse KG, he likes to make tired jokes.

Herb Sendek's worst crime was he couldn't take NC State beyond the first weekend of the NCAA tournament, and couldn't get AZ State consistently into the NCAAT. That guy just wins wherever he goes.

Do I want him at GT? No, but GT could do FAR FAR worse...and we have.

I had Randy Bennett #1 on my list and was the only one to have him on a list. Do I think it's realistic? Only slightly. Does he flat out win? Absolutely. Josh Schertz was my #2. My "reach" was Russell Turner not because I don't think he wouldn't do well here but because he's been at UC Irvine forever and I don't think he's leaving. BTW, Siddle just got awarded COTY for the CAA.

Take a look at NBA first place team in East. They’ve got an assistant who is receiving a lot of credit for the team’s success as he actively participates in practice and drills, developing younger players. Just need’s a HC job or maybe join GT as top assistant and heir apparent as Alan Huss is at Creighton.
