Pretty good article about the state of the ACC by David Hale.

Some key takeaways are that much of the blame for the ACC’s falling behind its power 4 competitors stems not so much from Jim Phillips’ leadership (he’s trying), but from its membership. Lots of private schools whose presidents weren't aligned with football investment, and the league's history of being basketball-focused. This is changing, but is it too little, too late?
Makes you wonder why the ACC even has a league head if the membership makes them ineffectual. Surely there are some members who would welcome strong leadership and direction?

We have school with leaders that think a good football/ other teams are vital to a students college experience.
Unfortunately for the acc these schools have been vad for a few years which has nadexfor chaos

We had schools with leaders that think the opposite. Most of them have moved in to the group that says, """ i ll try"'.

Gt is the leader of the ill try group.

I’ll give Phillips credit for going to the sources of the issue - the presidents. We have had our own tension with them over the years, so we know it’s an issue. This is also the biggest positive change for GT - Pres. Cabrera (God bless his soul).

The schools the ACC have added since 2004 have (mostly) all been smaller, more academic oriented or basketball-first schools. My sense is they were chosen for their cultural fit. *But it’s the culture that needs to change.*

Neither Louisville nor VPI are know. For academic rigor, but Louisville was/is a big basketball brand. VPI may be the most non-academic/basketball school the ACC has chosen, but they did have a good football program (so did Miami, but they also have some academics). So, it’s not like they haven’t tried, but every step has failed. FSU finally slipped. Clemson seems to be leveling out. Miami has never lived up to its expectations. VPI finally waned. Syracuse and BC never really clicked in football other than a season or two. Oddly, Louisville, it can be argued, has the most long-term success across all three major sports.

Meanwhile, GT, UVA, UNC, NCSU, Wake, and Duke have all continued doing the ACC thing.

But UK, USCe, Arky, Mizzou, and MSU, and even UF and AU, all seem to be floundering in the SEC. That’s half that conference, too. But their top brands are performing and that’s the difference, IMPO.

I don't think the revenue differences between teams in conferences were too large until the last couple of decades. That difference became huge in 2 areas. Ability to pay coaches significantly more money and most importantly NIL money. The coach issue became strong in facilities, number of coaches, recruiting assistances, etc. The other thing is having major networks throw big bucks at 2 conferences: Fox/CBS with Big Ten and ESPN with the SEC.

Yes to the above… plus the unrelenting praise of the SEC, which could be the biggest issue of all.

As I said in another thread, Phillips may be doing good things behind the scenes, but he needs to be out front in the public eye.

All I will say from my personal and professional experience is that effective leaders are highly visible and their actions speak louder than their words. In other words, you didn't have to question or wonder about their effectiveness. It was or is seen and felt. In other words, if you have to question a person's efficacy or extend them the benefit of the doubt, the person in question is not truly a leader. An administrator most likely. A word of caution - my better half thinks I am harsh or cynical in most personnel matters and she is probably right so be advised.

Well said. Those leaders are low volume high demand...

Leadership is undervalued & underappreciated, ironically. & cynicism (armchair experts) sucks up all that oxygen. Oops. I'm afraid that sounds cynical.

VTech was added during the height of Beamer ball wasn't it? Would the ACC have added them today with the enthusiasm they had for them back then?

UVA insisted on it. If we added any team, it had to be VPI. Compare that to UGAg’s attitude. Therein is the difference between the ACC and the SECheat, IMPO.

It's actually pretty simple. You:

• Advertise your product,

• Respect your customers, and

• Never talk about or acknowledge the merits of the competition.

This formula works best when your product is good; vis Apple down through the years. And the formula is the same in business, politics, education … shoot almost any field of organized human behavior. The ACC is a good conference and has good records against other conferences in all sports. The Commish needs to get with this program.

for all the crapping on Duke for their terrible OOC results, UVA also had a super soft schedule. So who knows who should win this.

UVA skipped GT, Pitt, Miami. Lost to NCST but not as a conference game 🤦‍♂️. Beat Wazzu by 2… needed 2OT vs FSU… lost to Wake… we’d be in charlotte with their schedule.

Both Duke and UVA are very average teams.
