Any conference we join will create rivalries and interest over time. There are multiple ACC teams, for instance, that I’m only interested in if we are in the same conference. I had no interest in them before and would have no interest afterward if we leave the ACC.

Same with SEC teams. Most of them I couldn’t care less about if they are not conference games. For me, our most interesting schedules were played when we were an independent, but that’s no longer feasible.
I have to think if we get in the BIG there will be other ACC teams coming along, they then might form up a geographical pod system of divisions

We already have rivals. I don’t want to wait 15 years to establish new ones.

Seriously, who in our ACC schedule would you hate to not play anymore?

For me it’s teams like Notre Dame, Miami, and FSU, all rivalries from our independent days.

As for the SEC, other than Georgia, there are only about 3 teams I would care anything at all about playing. And it’s the same for the B1G.

So any conference we join if we leave the ACC is about the same for me.

Just curious, if we get invited to join the Big10, will that change the mind of everyone wanting only Conference Champions to get into the CFP?

I basically feel the same. I’d even go one step further. I don’t really think we have any other rival other than Georgia.

i really think some teams jumping from the ACC to B10 is the only realistic way for us to get an invite. I think it will be tougher than expected for FSU and Clemson to get in the SEC with Florida and SC balking. Of course Tx getting in over A&M's objection counters that. I think GT, Miami, UNC and 1 more could be a realistic mix. My take is if the B10 makes a move it will be to go 20 or 24 teams. But only if the money makes sense.

Clemson ? and I would love to play Auburn but I may be the only one that would like to see Auburn as a rival.
Well, to me, the issue remains the same. If we just play teams I’m interested in, or that are our rivals, then we have to go independent, which is a non-starter. Any conference we join will create rivalries out of necessity not out of preference.

My dislike for Clemson isn’t really stronger than any other ACC teams. Maybe that is just me.
Ok real question why do you have to dislike a team for them to be a rivalry? I know lots of people my age think of Duke being a rival but I didn’t but I don’t like them and I guess it cause it was easy to beat them most years. I hate ND but don’t consider them as a rivalry cause we don’t play them every year.

Never mind I think I answered the question about how I feel about Duke

I’d like to play Clemson, FSU, Miami, and Duke on a similar regular schedule. Could care less about any other Conference. But, Georgia has piles of fans from other places. Just in our small church we have Penn State, Ohio State, FSU, and Tennessee fans.

Clemson, VT, FSU, Duke, Notre Dame, Miami. But the other thing is their fans are around here. I can talk to them about the games. Playing in a conference where the closest team is a two hour plane ride away just isn’t fun.

I'm pretty sure other than Ga we've played Duke more than any other team.
Might be Clemson??

This year's game against Duke tied Auburn as our 2nd most played opponent in our history (92 games). That's sort of amazing when you consider we've only played Auburn twice since 1997. The first time we played Duke was 1933. We've played them every year since then except 2023. We had played Auburn 36 times before we ever faced Duke in 1933. (ETA: we are scheduled to host Duke next year)

This sort of reminds me of the generational divide among Florida fans: For the old folks it was UGA and no one else was even close. For the younger crowd it was FSU. I don't know about any generational divide with Tech fans though it would not shock me to find that there is one. As for me, UGA is always number one with Clemson a distant second. No one else really moves the needle anymore not even Notre Dame or Miami which is kind of sad but reflects my personal apathy more than anything else.

Yes. Even down here in south Georgia hotbed of college football in our own small church we actually have more Tech fans than anything else. For some reason, we have a bunch of engineers who graduated from Tech. We have UGA fans, FSU fans, Clemson fans, a rabid South Carolina fan, a couple of downtrodden Florida fans and that is about it. Astonishingly we have no Auburn fans although they infest the landscape elsewhere.

For the longest time while Dodd was coach he hated going to Durham to play Duke or to New Orleans to play Tulane. He claimed that Tech seldom played well in either venue and it was a struggle for coaches to get the team to focus. We usually won but it was often, though not always, a nail biter. T he teams that the coaches and players were usually sky high to play were UGA, Alabama, and Tennessee. These days, I don't know that Tech players and coaches get excited about anyone other than Clemson and UGA. We seem to play well against UNC and Miami for whatever reason. These are just my personal opinions and observations that may be totally off regarding our team's attitude towards different opponents.

Yes. Some "rivalries" are intense in their moment and time, but the real ones last for many many decades. For example, there was a time back in the 90's that the GT-UVA games were very much a "rivalry". It kinda started with 41-38 in 1990, but there were a lot of games during that decade that had a lot of trash talk between programs. We beat them 41-38 again (Dez White!). Tiki Barber ran his mouth about how their program was better than ours, their fans were better than ours, and so forth. In the 2000's we had a good short-term "rivalry" with Virginia Tech after they joined the ACC in '04.

Just me I admit, but I still say Notre Dame-Southern Cal is not nearly the "rivalry" as they make it sound. Maybe back in the 70's. Maybe. Only maybe. A rivalry is one based on geography and folks going to work together talking smack or sitting down together at Thanksgiving dinner with multiple school sweatshirts on. When you have to divulge your commitment to one or the other by age 6, you know you have a rivalry.

This past weekend I was missing the Pitt-Penn State games from when I was watching as a much younger lad on TV. Often played in the snow. Or, Nebraska-Oklahoma. *SIGH*
