The true fix for all of this nonsense is 2 year contracts that are actually contracts with buyouts. Then who gives a **** if people buy out our players and we make the money back we then spend it on other players and their buyouts. We are 2 years from this.
I estimate the Washington case is actually going to establish what a contract means.
1 year contracts are fine. Let the school and player agree on the length and $$ but then both are stuck with the result. Player can't break it early and team can't cut the player either. Mutual commitment.

KQ posted the breakdown of this. TLDR - He's being a drama queen

Last year, he was pissed that we signed TEs out of the portal as he wanted to be the featured TE. He's a decent passing threat, but he sucks at blocking. He also asked for more money and we obliged.

This year, he is pissed that we signed a TE out of the portal who has the same skillset he has, but is better and proven. He asked for more money, we told him to kick rocks.

Man, what a year to leave GT if you're a TE. You have an NFL level TE coach coming in as your coordinator. He values TE and multiple TE sets. If you're a TE, you should be stoked about what's coming for TEs in our offense.

Good luck, buddy. This is reminding me of Canion. Good player, but he is not elite. If he can't handle competition at the college level and wants to dictate how our roster is managed, I'm not sure he's going to handle other places well. Harpring had the most catches as our TE, but Seither had way more yards on less catches. Beetham had 24 less yards receiving on only 6 catches versus Harpring's 13 catches.

Harpring is the only returning TE that registered a catch, but Corbo is gonna THRIVE in this offense, and whatever TE wants NFL level coaching will do the same. This is not going to put a dent at our TE position. We'll be just fine.

Yeah, no. That won't work out too well.

We got several experienced WRs and TEs from the Portal the last 2 seasons. We are going to have to do that again.

Currently out of all the TEs and WRs we have on the roster or are coming in as Freshman we have 1 person with live games reps. One. And he was a Freshman this season. Jordan Allen.

This seems like really bad roster management. Sorry to sound too critical but hopefully we land some more help from the Portal. We need some game time experience.
There has been more going on in the locker room than we realized. This is exactly why Saban got out of coaching. Its about how much are you willing to pay me and will i be featured in the offense.
This is what drives these coaches to get long term contracts and huge salaries. If they get fired, so what. They are set for life. Have one big season, get an extension with a raise. Set for life, and while they bleed the donors so they can keep their job.
Sorry to be so negative but Harpring situation really got to me this morning.
I had already given up on basketball. A sport I played and loved in HS.
I have some hope for women's sports, baseball and golf. They are not as corrupted -----YET.

Is he just getting bad advice? He still would've been MORE featured this year than last. We were graduating all the other TEs who played, of course we were going to portal someone in.

I have zero insight to this, but if Quinlan is posting that he wants more money, and he's not happy with GT bringing in TEs, then it seems like he's leveraging 3 TEs aging out of eligibility.

Either way, see ya. He's not Jackson Hawes, and he's certainly not Brock Bowers. Thanks for the effort, GT is gonna be GT with or without you.

Speaking of womens sports, can someone explain how Chit Chat Wright is a star at Iowa, Kara Dunn looks really good at USC, Dani Carnegie is doing well at UGA without the ball hogging BS she pulled at GT, and Tonie Morgan is thriving at KY? WTF was going on with womens basketball last year? Was Nell just checked out and done with this mess?

We would have been loaded in women’s basketball this year.

Seems like each of them got a bigger bag than GT could afford to play elsewhere.

Our resources are being concentrated to Football and men's basketball. That's the smart thing. The thought is, once Football and MBB is doing well money will flow down to the other sports.

It's just a sh!tty time in college sports if you're not a factory school or backed by oil/tech money. You're highlighting the ancillary affects of what happens downstream.

I think the buy-out model will eventually become standard and will work very well for distributing money all the way throughout CFB. Let smaller schools get a reward for finding and developing players for P4 teams and continue that model.

I don't mind the portal as a concept, but unlimited moves and unlimited dollars is a recipe for what we're seeing. Cap the number of moves, maybe one freebie and then free if coach leaves and do something about the money side.
There’s a reason no pro sports league allows it. The sport simply becomes an exercise in managed chaos.

To the poster that said GT probably won't be seeing anymore surprises since players could declare before the official window...well... 🤷‍♂️

Players are still negotiating with their schools, so seeing more "surprises" won't be...surprising. Ahem...

I think this is less of a Harpring decision and more of a GT decision honestly. Nathan Brock has developed our TE room nicely and Harpring was just getting buried in the depth chart.
I was really pleased with the situational use of our tight ends. Harpring had plenty of opportunities in certain passing situations. He was not as reliable as a blocker. I thought it was good team effort and tight end by committee use of personnel.

The adults in the room need to nut up (excuse my language) and get things handled. Everyone knows what needs to happen, but no one wants to bite that bullet. Some schools, like Texas Tech, LOVE this chaos because they are just cherry picking the best players and inducing players to leave schools while they're still playing.

Unfortunately, the adults that need to step up probably have stepped out and don't want to return to the decision room.

They get their littke feelings hurt when a player transfers in at their position. If we get a "name" qb out of the portal, we likely will see transfers out of the guys we now have. Our qb room could be decimated as well as WR and TE.

I wonder if Harpring was really kind of lukewarm about coming here in the first place. There was some kind of unexplained long delay before he actually signed on, as I recall.
Seems we have several good tight ends, though, on the roster.

1 year contracts don't fix the issue not really, Really any length of contract is good if you want to do a 1 year you know you will be shopping the player at the end of it like a normal free agency deal. If you want to give a kid a 4 year contract... its a 4 year contract.
