A degree program specifically for athletes who don't plan to stay at any school more than a year or two will be a "universally WORTHLESS degree program". Right up there with underwater basket weaving, zero chance I am hiring anyone with that on their resume. I can't imagine many coaches want to bring in players that would be on such a degree program either, its an immediate red flag that they aren't looking to stick around, just get paid.
Are we really thinking they are still student athletes or has P4 athletics (specifically football and men's basketball) become the minor leagues? I am certain it is 95% the latter.

The vast majority of college football players never were "student athletes"; that was a term coined by the NCAA to facilitate its con.

Most CFB players have always been football players first who did what they had to do academically in order to stay eligible.

I still can’t understand why smart GT fans still use terms like “new world”, etc regarding college football. This sport has been a joke for 60 years. Dooley bought a Natty in 1980 with Herschel and then Danny Ford bought Clemson a Natty a year later. And high end players have never cared about school which is why teams like GT have suffered for 60 years.

The only thing that has changed (thankfully) is the GT’s of the world can now openly buy players. Of course, with that we will buy players who don’t care about school. That’s fine by me. Throw them in the easiest courses you can find for as long as they are willing to take our NIL money and then kick the curb when they stop. I have no care if they ever get a job or live in momma’s couch for the rest of their lives. That’s a them issue to deal with not GT’s or the sport of football.

Roddy just now advocated starting a “universal degree program” adopted by all power football programs, to facilitate portal players more easily transferring credits.
I 100% agree with this. Of course, if someone wants to Major in Physics, they should be allowed to do this also. I think most players just want to play football and could care less about some Major. The NCAA should just quit kidding itself and design a universal Major that includes courses that will benefit players throughout their life. Stuff like public speaking, household budgeting, the value of investing, avoiding scams, buying a house or a car, checkbook balancing, etc.

I like Roddy and think he's generally a good rep for GT, but how in h-e-double hockey sticks is anyone going to get 200 different schools to agree on a one size fits all degree program that doesn't violate the academic mission of any of the schools?

There already is one. It's a ba in communications. Our problem is we cannot offer a bag in anything and that's a bor imposed limitation when we were going to have a school of commerce we'd have had plenty of them. They took that from us.

Understand, and that’s what I’m saying. The distinctives of any university will preclude this from happening. Do we really think that GT will accept all those liberal arts (or math, for that matter) courses from ODU when an athlete wants to transfer?

Eventually failed NFL players who still have eligibility will be allowed to return to college football. Roddy's idea would probably be good for Tech. College football is a mess.

Just make it online. Same courses for everybody. Call it a GT NCAA degree.

Academics should be what sets Georgia Tech apart from other schools in the NIL era. We should have a real degree with a focus on business, finance, contracts, communications, etc. that draws athletes to us. Show kids that they have a choice: a) get short term money that they can blow and end up a poor has been, or b) come to Tech and become a business mogul, entrepreneur, pro sports agent after their playing days to create generational wealth and build an empire. Hire Shaq as an advisor to show what an athlete with business sense can do.

We've tried that the past 60 years and it has led us to mid level status because the vast majority of high end players of the past 40 years simply want to play with other high end players and get drafted. Sure, you have exceptions like Calvin, Luck, and a few others who chose academic schools but the vast majority of studs don't care (the reasons why they don't care are a huge societal issue but that's another topic). What you posted works great for the 3 stars and below because the majority of those teenagers understand where they actually stand in the sport which is why the academic schools have a majority of them.

The real question for most schools and fanbases is this - do you really want to win or do you just want to field a team and have something to do? GT has clearly decided the past 60 years to just field a team for something to do. Otherwise, we would have had a robust bagman system and bought a lot more players and won. Instead, we ceded the bagman system to Bama, UGA, Auburn, FSU, Clemson, and South Carolina in our area and watched 95% of high end Atlanta area players play for everyone else not named Georgia Tech. That was a decision GT made.

NIL is so new it's hard to tell right now if GT is really serious. Sure, we bought the 5 star last year and made some really nice no name acquisitions like Haynes King, Malachi Hosley, and Rutledge who all turned into studs, but until we start outbidding UGA, Bama, Auburn, etc for guys out of high school I'm still unsure. Buying the RB Haynes was definitely a big time move but it sure would have been nice to have gotten 3-4 guys of that caliber, like Seaton. I am way past the point to believe we will actually win at a big time level because GT has yet to commit to do that. I do believe we can be a 8-9 win team pretty consistently with a chance for an ACC title every 4-5 years but will that be enough to pack the Dodd and keep Key. Key will continue to be sought after as there will be 5-7 firings from top 25 teams every year and eventually Key may decide to go if our classes remain in the 30-40 range.

95% of the athletes don’t care about any of that
