Over $200 million paid out in buyouts to coaches, halfway through the regular season. It's obscene and stinks to high heaven.

This is what makes me disgusted with bigtime college football.

Well that and the fans who cry about players getting NIL money & the portal while saying nothing about the gross waste of millions by stupid and impatient schools snd boosters.

I mean think about it. If your coach only won 34 games the prior three seasons, and only won two playoff games last year wouldn't you pay him an ungodly amount of money to go away?
My thoughts exactly. This is a great example of the decadence of the human condition, IMPO.

Firing James Franklin, paying a huge buyout, and hiring Manny Diaz to replace him would be a pretty hilarious string of events.
Diaz won't be at the top of their list. My guess is the top guys would be Rhule at Nebraska, a former Penn State player that has turned 3 college programs around. I also think Cignetti from Indiana is very high on their list as what he has done at Indiana is remarkable. I suspect they will watch how the season plays out.

Money is not an issue for Penn State.

Duke board is claiming that the current PSU AD was the AD at Temple when Diaz signed on to be their HC and then bailed out 17 days after their publicly announced him b/c the Miami job opened up. Imagine there could be some bad blood there? Or maybe not since the move netted Temple $4M of buyout for their trouble.

Re: Franklin

The thought hit me this morning about preseason rankings. Normally it’s in the context of complaining about how teams like GT are so low and have to earn everything before getting credit.

But for teams like Penn St, look what an inflated preseason ranking does to them… if no rankings came out till mid season, I wonder how much more stability it would create with fewer firings.

Maybe sports agents are the biggest beneficiary of preseason rankings afterall.

Penn State lost in the College Football Playoff semi final last year and returned nearly everyone on offense and a good chunk of their defense. Their Preseason Ranking was reasonable based on what they had returning from a very good team.

For whatever reason they fell apart after the 2 OT loss to Oregon.

Schools don't seem to be waiting long to fire coaches this year!

Rome’s coliseums were said to be a priority in the fading empire.

Too cynical? 🤨
Yes. They were a regular part of Roman town/city design from the gitgo. During the Republic, when gladiatorial games and animal hunts were part of private religious ceremonies after a prominent person died, the arenas were usually temporary structures made of wood and disassembled afterwards. (This applied to theaters too.) But the "games" proved extremely popular and by the end of the Republic were used to build popular support. At that time building the arenas in stone and allowing the wealthy and politically ambitious to put on games in remembrance of relatives and such became the way to go. The Empire continued the practice with imperial support.

Strange people. But this is the distant past and they did things differently then.

Rhule will probably be their main target, I agree. That is their moon shot. I highly doubt they can get Cignetti from Indiana. Poaching guys who are doing well at other big schools isn't going to be easy. Indiana and Nebraska have money also.

Nebraska is an equivalent revenue team to Penn State, too 10 programs. Indiana is a tier lower due to lousy football forever.

Not a guarantee but as good a predictor for college football as any when viewed from how many of the high performing players are returning. Generally talent matters in college football. Not a guarantee for sure.
