BC grad here (son went to Tech). Decatur’s scouting report is accurate. They play small ball and try to put pressure on the defense. Solier, Manolfi, Larson and a couple of others run almost every time they are on base. And Interdonato will bunt anyone, even the 3 and 4 hitters, which drives a lot of BC people nuts. That said, they regularly score runs without getting a hit. Wang is a legit power threat, but watch out for Wolff. He has gotten hot recently (after being benched for a while). Their lineup is considerably weaker without Toomey (wrist/hand) and Hendrickson (shoulder).

Strength is pitching. Colarusso doesn’t throw hard but is a bulldog and generally keeps the team in the game. Miller has the biggest long term upside of the 3 starters, throws low to mid 90’s but has had a couple of bad starts in a row (seems like he has hit a wall?). Mudd is similar to Colarusso, doesn’t throw hard but moves the ball around, throws a ton of strikes and keeps guys off balance. Gonzalez will be first out of the pen on Thur. Very fast worker, throws low 90’s with a great curve. Soares is a mid 90’s guy who at times has looked dominant.

The question with BC is always will they score enough. I know GT can really hit and even against good pitching will score runs. It will be interesting to see if BC can score enough to win a game or two.

The weather for tomorrow looks poor. Would not be surprised if they played one game on Friday and DH on Saturday.

If we only play 2, 1 win gets it done regardless of what happens in Raleigh. Likewise, if we only play 1, 0 wins gets it done.

ETA: This is interesting. Conspiracy theorists RISE UP. Both Ga Tech and BC are mathematically incentivized to minimize the number of games played this weekend.
This raises an interesting question. Do both teams need to agree to play a doubleheader? Or is it a decision made by someone in the ACC? I can see where one team may say sorry but we don't want to play two in one day if they don't have to especially with the ACC Tournament looming and you want to give your arms more rest. Personally I don't think that would be something CJR would do but I can't say I would blame him or the BC coach if either of them wanted to avoid a DH.

I've always heard... before a game begins, it's up to the coaches to start a game or not. After it starts, the umpires decide whether a game continues or not.

...but I cannot source that reliably.

Observations:
  • They're going to try to get the top of the order on base by any means necessary, steal bases, move guys over, and get them in. Top 20 in the country in both sac bunts and sac flies. 8th in stolen bases.
  • Not much power outside of Wang
  • Bottom of their order drops off significantly from top, need to take advantage of this
  • Three lefties starting on the mound and their two main RPs are righties
  • Their pitchers don't walk guys, starters also don't strikeout a ton of guys
  • Avg pitching length
    • Colarusso: 5.0 IP
    • Miller: 4.2 IP
    • Mudd: 4.1 IP
Perhaps their lack of power is a good matchup for us. We seem to give up a lot of long balls, our staff may be more effective against a less powerful lineup.

Anyone know where to easily find(I.e, provided in season to date stats, already totaled) a breakdown of our hitting bs RHP and LHP?

I believe you are correct with that info. But who decides if a DH will be played if there is bad weather forecast? Is it the coaches or the league? And if it is the coaches do both have to agree or is it just the home team? Likewise, once a game has been rained out (that was never started) who decides if the game is made up with a DH or cancelled altogether?

I think I found the answer with the help of AI:

In college baseball, the decision to play a doubleheader following a rainout is primarily made by the home team's head coach and administration (athletic director or game management), often in consultation with the visiting team and conference officials. While umpires decide when to stop a game due to weather, the rescheduling of a rained-out game into a doubleheader is a logistical decision based on scheduling, field availability, and travel requirements.

  • Pre-Game: If a game is rained out before starting, the home institution, in coordination with the conference, typically decides to reschedule it as a doubleheader.
So I'm guessing if the ACC office gets involved they will do everything in their power to make sure the games are played so UNC has a chance to take over the top spot. I personally would prefer that we win it based on merit but BC also has a stake in things and they could be the determining factor if they don't want to chance losing a hosting opportunity.

I want all 3 games to be played. If weather keeps that from happening, that's just how it goes. It is clear that the ACC (rightly) expects teams to make every effort to get all the games scheduled complete. Throughout the years, all teams seem to be very proactive about changing start times and working in DH's as needed to get that done.

If BC wants to be in consideration for a hosting opportunity they will want to play (and win) all the games. Right now they aren't in the discussion for a host site UNLESS the NCAA wants a true northeastern regional. As it stands right now, the discussion around BC is if they are in one of the 2 seed buckets, or are they in the bigger group of 3 seeds. I expect that they would be a 2 seed, especially if they can win 1 game this weekend and win a game in Charlotte.

Thanks for the info and welcome!

We're definitely going to need to limit the free passes this weekend.

Colarusso sounds like the type of pitcher who gives us trouble - a lot like the Xavier guys we saw a few weekends ago. We definitely hit better against harder throwing guys than soft. With all three of their starters averaging 5 innings/game or less, it may be one where we have to get to the bullpen before we do our major damage. Looking forward to see how we do against Gonzalez and Soares. We've performed pretty well against guys like that so far. The exception would be the 2 UNC guys (though they've moved one of them to starter now).

How many innings are our starters averaging? Tough to figure since our starters have often been relievers too. I'd bet less than 3.0. (Not much but more than 1.0.)

I hope whatever it is, that Ramsey has a quicker hook now that the games are more important.

Update, I was thinking all starters, not just the 3 this weekend and including weekday starters. Our weekend starter are averaging:
  • McKee 61IP & 13 starts is about 4.2 (4.69 decimal) 4.57 ERA
  • Ballard 14.1 IP in 4 starts is about 3.2 (3.58 decimal) 3.38 ERA
  • Blakely 50.2 IP in 10 starts is about 5.0 (5.07 decimal) 2.84 ERA
  • There are 24 other starts out there which will drag average down.
Given quality to date, I'd say we are pitching reverse.

Seems like the only question is whether/how they will get 3 games played starting Game 1 after 2pm tomorrow (Fri).

I'll be tuned into UNC at NC State tonight.
Is someone reporting the game being delayed or cancelled today?

Trying to keep up but this annoying work crap keeps getting in the way
