Riley has the stuff to be the lights out 9th inning closer. IFF he can get his control…..
100% agree with this. Have felt all year he's better in the pen.
If he could gain control of his stuff, He reminds me a little bit of the flame thrower..Zach Maxwell. You don't have to have pinpoint control (Mason Patel) like a long reliever or starter does but there was a reason that Mitch Williams was called "The Wild Thing"

I'd argue that you don't even have to have great control to be a lights out 9th inning closer. Wildness is much more effective towards the end of games than it is in the beginning.
^^^^This. Zach Maxwell was wild at times. Could walk the bases loaded and then turnaround and k the side.
Most college kids don't want to wear a 98 mph fastball to the ribs so digging in against a closer is different than a starter...

There…NOW we agree!!! Some level of scary wildness is a great asset…..

To be completely honest, I think the starter role is in his head a little and he'd loosen up and throw a little better in a later role. There's still pressure, but it's a different kind of pressure. I really think he's got what it takes to be a great reliever and potentially closer.

Granted, last night does not provide evidence to support that thought.

Lackey had a good night, but I'm a little disappointed we didn't give him a break. Getting Shoush the start a DH was cool and good to get him more experience, but I'd much rather have a fresher Lackey. Then we left him in longer than I thought we would considering the 8 run first inning. He did look good at the plate and hit his second homerun, but again I'd rather have him fresher later in the season. And again get Rogers more than the two at bats he got.

Also, man I hope that meant we've seen the last of the Riley Sunday experience at least for a while.
@DecaturJacket You're nearing the point where I'm going to have to definitively declare you right and admit I'm wrong. As long as we win, I'll happily keep choking on my crow. Congrats on not backing down, it was about 10:1 or more just a few weeks ago but you held firm. I do enjoy the alternative opinions. There's a lot of knowledge and experience on here & I do like it when people offer it up. Makes this a good site to visit.

I like to think that I know a few things pretty well. Baseball is one them.

I'm really curious to see who we trot out there Sunday now and whether Brady can build on last weekend's performance on Saturday. It's nice to have an offense where no matter what you feel like you're going to be in any game, but hopefully we can maximize the potential of the arms we have and get some consistency in those two spots. I think we have several answers and it'll be interesting to see how Taylor plays it.

When was the last time people one this board talked about all the different pitching options we have? Also, once again we are an offensive juggernaut despite injuries to a couple of key starters and fielding the youngest lineup in the entire ACC. Wouldn't it be ironic for Hall to finish his career at Tech the same way he started it - with a trip to Omaha. Obviously we have a long way to go before that happens but I feel like this team wants to send their Hall of Fame coach out in style.
