Well, for what it’s worth (?), Alberto’s older brother Fernando said that his younger brother Alberto is better than he himself (Fernando) was as a college freshman.
The potential potential is staggering. He's got to have some solid genes, anyway.
In my humble opinion, Alberto Mendez is the best possible QB for our particular situation that we could possibly have ended up with off of this portal.

Yep. I want a team of guys who are not only smart but want to prove the doubters wrong. When we‘ve had those type of guys we’ve won. The last few years we’ve seemed to have too many players of “me” first. I’m looking at the WR and DB positions. I’ll have no problem watching a 3 TE set playing rugby. If our defense has any type of improvement we’ll win plenty of games.

If we're hoping for Peyton Manning but end up with Eli Manning, I'll be just fine with that. 🙂

On a serious note, QB battle should be exciting for GT fans. Mendoza and Adamson are very similar in body types and skillsets, but Mendoza has the edge in experience. Adamson has the edge in our system which Key has said is staying the same for the most part.

Knowles has the highest ceiling, IMO, in terms of physical tools. There's a LOT of NFL physical tools with Knowles. Physical tools are great, but can he apply them in terms of what a QB has to do? The most important tool a QB has isn't his arms or legs, it's what's between his ears. That's not just Knowles, but Mendoza and Adamson as well.

Even if GT paid Mendoza a seven figure amount to come to GT, I really don't think the staff will ride it out with him if Knowles or Adamson are the better option at QB1. Key would lose the locker room, and it would go against the ethos he's been preaching since he became HC.

Interesting times overall on the Flats next season.

True enough, but with this exception:

If the play hadn't been so successful, we might have a 14-play drive to go on.
That really shows nothing compared to Mendoza's tape, respectfully. That was just a quick swing pass that was ran 84 yards for a TD.

I'm critical of PFF, but one thing they can tell from film is how a QB performs under pressure. Mendoza's QBR against the blitz graded out at 90+...which is elite. You can see it in the game film available out there. Unfortunately, whoever our QB is next season will probably face a ton of pressure early on until our OL gells. Another thing he does that will help our OL is he gets the ball out quick and processes the play progressions efficiently. If it's not there he gets what he can with his legs...which is a weapon for our offense.

Of course, the B1G is not at the same level as the ACC, so hopefully he can step up in competition seamlessly...

I genuinely believe we are lucky Fernando didnt go down at any point in the playoffs and Alberto forced to play significant minutes. He would have done well and the price would have gone up.

Imagine if Alberto won the last 2 games or something and looked great, the tone would have been very different and some other team could have swooped in and grabbed him.

And don't forget Cole Bergeron. Highest rated recruit of all four top 20 QB recruit nationally. Has all the tools. Early enrollee. Of course, I'd be shocked if he won the QB battle as a True Freshman. He'd have to blow the doors off. But I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up as QB 2a or 2b.

Limited data, but Mendoza looks to have that 'it factor'. He's fast and agile and has great situational awareness. Like King, Justin Thomas and Hamilton, able to make something out of nothing. Not saying he'll be as good as that group. But that's a great attribute for a QB. Especially in the system Key wants to run. At Tech, we're probably never going to have a steel wall of an OL for a QB to stand behind as a statue. All our great QBs have had the ability to scramble for gains.

“It” factor is a real possibility.

I just watched Bergeron’s highlights out of curiosity, and WOW! So much to like. He throws a beautiful deep ball, seemed to have developed amazing chemistry with his receivers ( he always seemed to know just where to place the ball so that only his receiver could get it), placed the ball in tight windows with ease, displayed good pocket awareness and ability to extend plays when protection broke down, and was able to throw accurately on the run. Plus he had some good examples of directing traffic during scrambles.

I really like Mendoza’s film, but Bergeron will definitely be a guy to watch. If he can adapt his game to the college level, watch out!

In ACC all access Andrea Adelson says Fernando Mendoza is the QB and Key does not correct her. Start at 6:40 in:
Yep, our starting QB was announced by Andrea Adelson and Key didn't so much whisper a qualifier.

The mantra, "competition is king" now gets an asterisk.

You don’t exactly invite a guy here like that without saying he’s gonna have an inside track at starting. At the end of the day Key could make a different decision
