Interesting, will backfire on someone. UNC is playing 5pm game so they'll know their opponent on Saturday (assuming they win).

Expect UNC to not throw their best on Friday, anyone heard? UNC pitching is very good at the top and shallow, so that weighs towards saving their better ptichers. They'll need to manage it well and hope pitcher overuse doesn't rear it's nasty head as has happened in past years.
UNC is throwing their #2 Lynch. FSU is also saving Mendez and throwing their #2.

Good point on VCU being a legit threat as well. UNC has to throw the kitchen sink Friday/Saturday to get to 2-0. Which probably means hitting well + burning both relievers. Then bullpen day for G6 (basically conceding) and then DeCaro + whichever of McDuffie / Glauber has more rest. Think their coach is going to really regret not building staff depth like Ramsey did. Borderline negligence when you consider the risk to these kids careers. Glauber threw 75 innings in 58 games as a freshman. Stupid.
it seems like it would be hard to recruit pitchers if he is noted for that (overuse). Seems like everyone who gets to the D1 level in any sport has a pro career as a target. Is my assumption about recruiting isssues true?

UNCs top 5 pitchers threw 68% of their total innings this year. Take our 5 most used pitchers and we are at 53%.

UNCs top 2 relievers threw 27% (!) of their total innings for the year. Patel / Gaudette combined for 14% of our total innings.

I mean Lynch would be most team's ace (ranked SP46 in latest d1b rankings), so it's not exactly the same as most teams throwing off. It's still a questionable move playing a pretty capable 4 seed in VCU though imo.

Moore isn't top 100, but he's still very good. They also have Trey Beard, who was their #2 earlier in the season, as their #3, so they've got some depth there. Also St Johns is terrible offensively.

Lynch last 2 appearances (both starts) were NC State on the road, and Pitt in the ACCT. So a 3 seed and a team that didn’t make it in. Average stats from those 2 games:

3.2 innings
8.5 hits
3.5 BBs
3.27 WHIP
4.5 ERs
11.1 ERA

Yikes.

Here’s and article from last year about pitching off

I think it's silly to pretend that this is the same scenario every time though. It's very much a situational decision and depends on your SP talent and depth and the offensive ability of your regional.

This is one study where I don't think the data is applicable across the board and therefore you can't really take much away from it.

IMO between our offensive ability and our pitching talent and depth, it would make zero sense to throw anybody but Tate or Jackson tomorrow.

The end of the article touches on that and basically says that. I do also think that the overall numbers being similar 63/61% also proves your point that it’s a situation by situation basis. If we assume that all the coaches are making the rational, “right” decision in their mind, the success rate is the same/similar.

If all other things being equal (63 vs 61%) I think most coaches in most sports tend to stick with what might draw them less scrutiny or second-guessing, which would be sticking with your regular rotation. I hate when you start outthinking yourself on things, like by hitting an iron or hybrid off the tee on a par 4 then pulling that into the woods on the left. Hit the damn driver. Stick with your rotation. (

As this may or may not apply to Ga Tech ... we do not have a clear #1. We have a guy who's started every Game 1 of every weekend going back 2 seasons.... but I would not even consider Tate going in our 2nd game as 'pitching off' ...from a 'stuff' perspective.
